Northville Now

Northville, MI Community

Northville, Michigan, might be known for its charming downtown and historic roots, but when spring rolls in, this town transforms into a playground for anyone itching to get outside. Whether you’re a local looking to stretch your legs or a visitor with a backpack and a sense of adventure, Northville’s trails and parks are ready for you. Here’s your guide to the top outdoor spots—plus a few tips on where to fuel up before and after your adventures.

Maybury State Park: The All-in-One Adventure Stop

If you ask anyone in Northville where to start your outdoor journey, most will point you straight to Maybury State Park. This place is a one-stop shop for everything active. Want to hike? There are miles of scenic trails winding through woods and meadows. Prefer two wheels? The park’s 6.3-mile single-track mountain bike loop is a favorite among local cyclists—it’s smooth, fun, and just challenging enough to make you feel like a pro.

Families love Maybury for its variety. There are equestrian trails for horse lovers, a day camp for kids, fishing piers, and even a working farm where you can pet goats and learn about local agriculture. The park’s history is just as interesting: it used to be a tuberculosis sanitarium, and now it’s a green space where everyone can breathe easily.

Pro tip: The wildflowers start popping up in April and May, so keep your eyes peeled for bursts of color along the trails.

Hines Park: The Trail That Keeps Going

Once you’ve conquered Maybury, follow the blue and red trail markers for The Link—Northville’s own biking and jogging highway. This path connects Maybury to Hines Park, a massive stretch of green that follows the Middle Rouge River all the way to Dearborn.

Hines Park is a patchwork of playgrounds, sports fields, disc golf courses, and picnic spots. The paved Hines Park Trail is the main artery, perfect for runners, cyclists, and anyone who likes their nature with a side of smooth pavement. Just be ready for the infamous climb between Bennett Arboretum and Cass Benton—this is the steepest part of the trail, and it’s not shy about making you work for your view.

Water bottle warning: Don’t forget to hydrate before tackling those hills. If you need a break, the playgrounds and river views offer plenty of excuses to stop and catch your breath.

Legacy Park: Northville’s Up-and-Coming Wild Side

For those who like to be first on the scene, Legacy Park is calling your name. This 332-acre green space is still a work in progress, but several miles of trails are already open to the public. The Bell Branch Loop Mountain Bike Trail is a beginner-friendly two-mile loop—smooth, flowy, and perfect for anyone new to mountain biking. Hikers can check out the Chinkapin Hiking Trail, which leads to a giant chinkapin oak tree (bring your camera), or wander the nature trails in Ward Woods.

Legacy Park is also a hotspot for wildlife. Deer are regulars here, and it’s not unusual to spot a herd or two during a quiet morning ride or walk.

Getting there: The park entrance is off Wayne Avenue, south of 7 Mile Road. Look for the “Coming Soon” signs—they’re your invitation to explore what’s already open.

Downtown Detours: The Twist, Ford Field Park, and More

You don’t need to leave downtown to get your outdoor fix. Northville’s pedestrian-friendly core, known as The Twist, is lined with shops, restaurants, and green spaces. Ford Field Park and Mill Race Historical Village are both within walking distance, offering riverside paths, historic buildings, and plenty of spots to sit and watch the world go by.

If you’re a fan of quirky detours, check out the Oakwood CemeteryFish Hatchery Park, and Denton Park—all easy walks from the center of town.

Where to Refuel and Relax

Every good adventure needs a pit stop. For breakfast, locals swear by Rebecca’s Restaurant. The front patio is perfect for people-watching, and the homestyle meals will keep you fueled for a day on the trails.

After you’ve worked up a sweat, head to the Exchange Bar and Grill, there’s a bike rack right outside, a rooftop patio for sunny days, and plenty of cold drinks to help you recover from that last hill climb.

If your bike needs a tune-up (or you just want to drool over new gear), swing by Town & Country Bikes & Boards. They’re right on The Twist and offer everything from repairs to new bikes and boards.

Spring in Northville: Your Next Adventure Awaits

From the wild trails of Maybury and Legacy Park to the riverside paths of Hines Park and the lively streets downtown, Northville is packed with outdoor options. So grab your sneakers, dust off your bike, and see what’s waiting just outside your door.
